ABOUT MCKINNEY-VENTO HOMELESS EDUCATION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Ada City School (ACS) District is committed to providing all students with quality educational experiences. We recognize the challenges that homeless children and youth have faced in enrolling, attending, and succeeding in school. These provisions promote greater stability for homeless children and youth and ensure that each has equal access to the same free, appropriate public education, including a public preschool education, as other children and youths. In addition, homeless students will not be separated from the mainstream school environment. Ada City Schools is committed to removing barriers of homeless students’ access to academic and extracurricular activities as well as removing the stigma of homelessness.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act guarantees a child who qualifies as homeless the right to attend one of two schools: the school of origin or the local attendance area school. For further information on the McKinney-Vento Act, visit the National Center for Homeless Education (NCHE) website at http://nche.ed.gov or contact the toll-free HelpLine at 800-308-2145. The Oklahoma State Department of Education provides additional information and answers to frequently asked questions about McKinney-Vento Homeless Education on their website at http://www.sde.ok.gov. Please contact the District’s Homeless Liaison for additional assistance.
