East Central University and the Care Closet Crew Receive District's Service Award

For the past several years East Central University has collaborated with the Ada City Schools in providing services for students.  The collaboration started with a "Christmas Connection" for secondary students.  The District began to realize that there were programs for elementary students who were not going to be receiving any gifts for Christmas, but that there were not really any services for older students.

East Central University Kinesiology Instructor, Matt McGaha and Associate Professor of East Central's Department of Education, Dr. Nanette Schmitt, recognized the students' needs and joined together to raise funds for Christmas gifts for students. They received funds and gifts from the Athletic Department, the Department of Kinesiology, the Education and Psychology Departments and many others.

Then, Mr. McGaha and Dr. Schmitt had the idea that East Central's education students could benefit from participating in the program.  These "future teachers" formed East Central's "Care Closet Crew," and since that time the Crew has developed and implemented numerous programs for the students of the Ada City School District.

The East Central students have held drives for toiletry items, clothing, food, and school supplies.  Mr. McGaha even found and delivered a washer and dryer for Washington Grade Center.  The team has delivered items to the high school Cougars Care Closet and have worked with high school counselors to organize the items for students.  Last spring, the group even helped to decorate Hayes Grade Center as well as the Hayes playground.

"While it is clear that East Central's future teachers will benefit from knowing about the needs of our students, it is really the students of the Ada City School District who are the benefactors.  Because of the generosity of East Central University and in particular, the Care Closet Crew, the students of our District have the capability to come to school ready to learn," said Executive Director of Academics, Paula Kedy.  "We are very proud to recognize East Central University and the Care Closet Crew as the recipients of the District's 2017 Volunteer Service Award."
